Handmade by David Hill

These are platinum handmade wedding rings designed to complement a very unusual scallop edge diamond set engagement ring. We designed the ladies ring to slot into her engagement ring perfectly, it reduces wear and feels more comfortable on the finger and creates a fantastic effect. She was very pleased with the finished product. Her fiancé wanted something to tie in with the theme but keeping it minimal and more masculine. So instead of scalloped edges we went with facets that followed the shape but kept a nice straight edge. We think the finished effect is one of the most unusual wedding rings we have made in recent years so we thought we would share it with the world.

This Weeks Favourite Item of Jewellery

We love this diamond ring because…

Originally this beautiful old cut diamond was part off a a larger five stone diamond ring, but our Jeweller David thought this diamond warranted a new lease off life. Old cut diamonds were cut by hand and polished on an old treadmill, this particular one is 75 points and although this diamond has an inclusion, the size and cut of the diamond make up for it. The way the diamond has been cut shows it to its best advantage and gives it an almost spider web like appearance, when you look at it from the top. We like old cut diamonds because they are unique, un like modern brilliant cut diamonds that are cut by machines and all exactly the same.

This diamond is not perfectly round and has more of a cushion shape which is why we chose a four claw setting which seemed to work really well with this diamond. You can tell an old cut diamond because the bottom point or cullet is usually polished flat creating a little circle when you look down from the table facet. It looks fantastic on and would make a perfect engagement ring for somebody who appreciates the beauty and uniqueness of old cut diamonds.

Hallmark Goldsmiths History

David Hill started training to be a jeweller when he was 16 years old (now a grand old age of 57 he’s also going deaf but he won’t admit it.. So speak up!!) so for 41 years he has been making repairing and restoring all kinds of jewellery and silverware and even the occasional handbag or whatever people throw at him! Originally on west street hallmark goldsmiths has been established since 1981, we pride ourselves on tackling the jobs that others have said are unrepairable! Our banner cross Sheffield shop is lovely, although our workshop still looks like something out of kelham island museum, to cut a long story short, if you have something that others have said no!  We will try our best to bring it back to life!

Welcome to the workshop blog!!

Hello world and welcome to our mucky workshop, as quoted by David (our onsite jeweller and owner as seen below.. and no he is Brian Ferry look alike act) ‘There’s everything in this shop its just finding it’! Although our onsite dog Henry never has any trouble finding things to chew.. thank god we keep repairs high out the way!! Despite the appearance of the workshop we have a very beautiful shop with lots of Antique and New Jewellery and Silverware available and if we don’t have it we can make it!! David does love a good challenge so please feel free to throw anything at him (Hot Water..Cups.. you know he does like a cup of tea..constantly!)

Thank you

Alexandra and Heather
